What is ICHRA? The Movement FAQ
A US National Movement

Your Health.
Your Choice.
Your Future.

Healthcare shouldn't be tied to your job. ICHRA provides an opportunity for every American worker to have portable, individual health insurance β€” coverage you own, no matter where you work.

What is ICHRA?

An Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) lets employers reimburse employees tax-free for individual health insurance β€” insurance you choose and own yourself.

1

You pick your plan. Choose any ACA-compliant individual health plan that fits your family's needs β€” not a one-size-fits-all group plan.

2

Employer reimburses you. Your employer sets a monthly reimbursement amount. You submit your premium receipts and get paid back, tax-free.

3

You keep it. Change jobs? Your insurance moves with you. True portability. The exception is if you move to an area not covered by your insurer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ICHRA and a traditional group health plan? β–Ό
With a group health plan, your employer picks one or a few plans for everyone. With ICHRA, your employer gives you money and you choose your own individual plan from the open market. You own your plan β€” it doesn't disappear when you change jobs.
Is ICHRA available to all employers? β–Ό
Yes! Any employer β€” from a 1-person startup to a Fortune 500 company β€” can offer ICHRA. There are no minimum or maximum employee counts. It was made available to all employers as of January 1, 2020 under federal rules.
What happens to my ICHRA coverage if I lose my job? β–Ό
Your individual health plan is yours, so it stays with you. You simply stop receiving reimbursements from your former employer, but you can continue paying your premium directly until you find a new employer (ideally one who also offers ICHRA). If you move to an area where your insurer doesn't offer coverage, then you would need to purchase a new plan.
How does ICHRA affect my ACA subsidies? β–Ό
If your employer offers you a sufficient ICHRA, you are generally not eligible for ACA marketplace subsidies. However, if the ICHRA offer is deemed "unaffordable," you may opt out and still qualify for subsidies. A broker can help you evaluate your options.
What if I don't know much about insurance, how do I find a plan that meets my needs? β–Ό
There a many resources available to help you learn and this website will add new informative content. There are also greater insurance brokers out there who can provide personalized guidance.
How long has ICHRA been available? β–Ό
The initial momentum started via Executive Order 13813, signed by President Trump in 2017. The first ICHRA plans became available in 2019, with effective dates on January 1, 2020.
Who are you? β–Ό
This website is currently managed by an individual who has been frustrated with group coverage for over a decade. He is in the process of creating a company that is a startup studio to manage this and other business ventures. More details to come.
